And the Winners Are!

Our convention this year saw an amazing turnout in Augusta! We elected our new officers, recognized excellence in the organization, and were privileged to get some time with our very own Senator David Perdue! Senator Perdue visiting our convention was unique experience; he wanted a Q&A session as opposed to a run of the mill stump speech. The candid nature in which he spoke with us was amazing and deeply appreciated.

Our officers were also elected for the coming term. Since an amendment to the GYR Constitution took effect at this convention, officers will now serve two years. Our officers elected are:

Chairman – Robert Lee (Cobb County)
Vice Chairman – James Hall (Savannah Area)
Treasurer – Prisca Villa (Gwinnett)
Secretary – Abbie Frye (Buckhead)
National Committeeman – Joseph Brannan (Greater Columbus)
National Committeewoman – Angelyn Dionysatos (Atlanta)

We also recognized the top performers over the last year in GYR. Our 2016 award winners are:

Chapter of the Year – Buckhead Young Republicans
Man of the Year – Keith Hanks, Buckhead
Woman of the Year – Nancy Hohlwein, CSRA
Newcomer of the Year – Jesse Head, NewRock
Event of the Year – GOP Debate Watch Party (hosted by AYR)
Johnny Isakson Award – Rep. Allen Peake
Supporters of the Year – Colin Martin & Linda Beggs

Winding down the year…

We had an amazing year here at the Georgia Young Republicans, and we can’t think of a better way to cap that off than celebrating being recognized as the Best State Federation in the YRNF for this past year! That’s right — among the states, Georgia is #1 — and that’s all because of your hard work over the last twelve months!

It doesn’t stop there either. We also won an award for having the Best Website in the YRNF, and our own Angelyn Dionysatos was recognized as the YRNF Woman of the Year! Quite a series of accomplishments, and we’re only getting started.

As we prepare for the end of this year and the beginning of the next with the GYR Convention in June, we can’t help but feel excited about the future. It’s going to be amazing, folks, and GYR will be leading the way!

Got ya, bruh!

We love April. The month’s showers bring May’s flowers. Baseball begins the long march towards October. Our future members in the College Republicans begin thinking about graduation…

…and of course, the month is started off by one of the best holidays of the year – April Fools Day! Now, a few (well, maybe more…) of you may have gotten punk’d by us. We’re here to assure you that the Georgia Young Republicans are in fine form. We continue to operate one of the best group of young conservatives in the country. Our chapters are growing, and our membership is growing with them. This is part of what we had to say on the matter:

“We are in an unprecedented era in American politics. Up is down, down is sideways, and many in our generation don’t know where to turn. We, as the Georgia Young Republicans, hope that at some level our little joke today can highlight one truth that never gets forgotten in the mix. Family comes first. The crazier the family, more often than not the stronger the bonds.
“If you’re not already a part of it, we hope to someday soon call you brothers and sisters.”

If you’re part of our family, you’re going to inevitably find a reason to laugh. It builds the bonds we need to fight together when the work is tough.

Goodbye, Mrs. Reagan!

This week saw the passing of Nancy Reagan, quite possibly one of the most gracious first ladies to join her husband in the White House.

Ken Duberstein, who served as Chief of Staff to President Reagan, said, “”Every time she was in the room, he was better, and every time he was in the room she was better. She brought a sense of class and dignity and elegance that everybody admired.”

Although we mourn her passing, we can always celebreate the legacy that both she and her husband left America with. The both loved this country deeply, its people most certainly, but above all each other.

Although we mourn, Mrs. Reagan, we rejoice in you joining your loving husband for eternity. Thank you for all you did for us.

Spring Training

Part of our efforts in GYR is to provide substantive value to our members and Republicans across the state. That is why we are so eager to feature another Basecamp session on February 27 in Columbus, right in the heart of downtown.

Our goal has always been to provide more than the simple “Here’s how to campaign” type learning session. It’s been focused on making sure we, as Republicans, know how to grow and flourish as leaders.

The session is only $25, and is easily worth a lot more! We hope to see you in Columbus, so make sure to visit http://gyr.gop/vdc00 for more information and to register!

Growing the Republican Base

As we move into 2016, one thing more than most is on the minds of people – the Presidential election. As younger voters are coming into their own and becoming more active in the political process, pundits want to know why the much maligned “Millenial” generation looks at issues the way they do and why.

Atlanta Young Republican President Angelyn Dionysatos and Vice President for Political Affairs Jake Evans joined NPR recently to discuss that very issue, among others, facing younger voters here in Georgia and across the country.

To listen to their interview, visit Soundcloud. Their portion of the program starts at about the 20:00 mark.

Growing the Republican Base

This past week, GYR visited the Cobb County Republican Party and spoke about how we can effectively grow the party. From the article in the Marietta Daily Journal:

The future success of Republicans depends on having a party willing to listen to the individual needs of younger generations. That was the message Rob Lee, chair of the Georgia Young Republicans, shared with those at the Cobb County Republican Party’s breakfast on Saturday.

As we grow the GOP, we will inevitably go through some changes. That isn’t a bad thing — it offers us the opportunity to show the Republican Party actually shares the values of individualism and prosperity that younger generations of voters are searching for!

GYR is Global!

We find it easy sometimes to get sucked into our little bubbles and never leave. However, there is a larger world out there that helps remind us of the impact we can have in our country and abroad.

This past weekend, the Georgia Young Republicans were honored to sign a “Brotherhood Pact” with fellow young conservatives in KDU Stockholm, our counterparts in Sweden’s largest district. Together, we hope to achieve an impact across the pond as well as at home.

The greatest thing about this agreement? We hope to welcome back our friends to our State convention in June…

…and who knows. Maybe GYR will be making an appearance in Sweden sometime soon, too.

Digital Engagement

Our efforts this year focus heavily on our digital presence so we can communicate with more young conservatives across Georgia.

Some of those efforts include expanding our social media network. Since our state convention in May, our Facebook presence has expanded by 27.51% and the reach of our content has grown 5 fold! Twitter has been slower growth of 6.6% since our convention, although we still made 22,427 unique impressions.

Just as important, we’ve launched some great new digital features for GYR:

  • Member Spotlights – highlighting who are members are and the work they do.
  • Caption Contest – Young Republican humor. Is there anything else to be said?
  • Branded Link Shortening – improved analytics with branded “gyr.gop/…” shortened links.

The Power of Conversation

The past couple of months have brought great opportunities to the Young Republicans. Personally, that has been the wonderful invitations to speak to Republican gatherings across Georgia since my election in May. The response I receive from Republicans has been overwhelmingly supportive of our efforts. That doesn’t just include the plans we have to recruit other younger party members into the fold. What has been well received across Georgia is the effort of the Young Republicans to build relationships with the leaders of our party who have a lot to teach us.
